Ginkgo Bioworks is a synthetic biology company based in Boston, Massachusetts. Synthetic biology (synbio) involves engineering living organisms to create new and useful bio-based products ranging from fragrances to pharmaceuticals.

As a brand designer, art director, illustrator, and creative strategist, I have been able to to play at the intersection of art and science, and create visual innovations for a horizontal platform serving the pharmaceutical, industrial, and agricultural industries.

Overview

From 2021 – 2024, I lead creative projects, managed the design system and expanded Ginkgo's brand expression.

Growing and maintaining a brand language and design system for the worlds largest horizontal cell programming platform presented many unique challenges. Ginkgo serves over five unique industries, each with their own set of challenges and cell engineering solutions.

Ginkgo's design system had to be versatile, it's brand expression striking yet grounded. Given our wildly different approach to engineering biology, it was imperative that we show people that a different science is possible.

Putting the bio back in biotech

I had the pleasure of collaborating with photographers, videographers, illustrators, animators, artists, and motion designers to create a color-drenched vision of our synbio future.

Where most biotech brands intentionally remove themselves from the biological aspects of their work, Ginkgo embraced the gooey, fleshy, weird side of biotechnology. We wanted to show the world that we were real people working with real biological systems to solve the worlds most pressing problems.
